A CISO's Guide to Application Security

Security breaches are expensive. They cost time, effort, remediation, and reputation restoration. Many IT decision-makers tend to focus their security efforts almost exclusively at the network perimeter. They overlook the software applications that run their day-to-day agencies. These applications are often packed with Social Security numbers, addresses, personal health information, or other sensitive data.

Focusing on security features at both the infrastructure and application level isnt enough. Organizations must also consider flaws in their design and implementation. Hackers looking for security flaws within applications often find them, thereby accessing hardware, operating systems and data. In fact, according to Gartner, 75% of security breaches are now facilitated by applications. The National Institute of Standards and Technology raises that estimate to 92%. And from 2005 to 2007 alone, the U.S. Air Force says application hacks increased from 2% to 33% of the total number of attempts to break into its systems.

To secure your agencys data, your approach must include an examination of the applications inner workings, and the ability to find the exact lines of code that create security vulnerabilities. It then needs to correct those vulnerabilities at the code level. Finally, a comprehensive prevention strategy is needed to fend off future attacks and mitigate current ones.

As a CISO, you understand that application security is important. What steps can you take to avoid a security breach? Read the CISOs Guide to Application

Is an Energy-wasting Data Center Draining Your Bottom Line?

An unforgiving economic climate has left many organizations struggling to sustain (or restore) profitability. Many of them reacted to the downturn by restructuring, trimming back R&D and marketing, and laying off employees. All of these moves leave a company in a vulnerable position when the market rebounds, which it inevitably will.

Meanwhile, huge potential savings are sitting, untapped, right in the companys data center.

Data center energy costs as a percent of total revenue are at an alltime high. In fact, energy costs are emerging as the second highest operating cost in the IT organization, behind labor. A typical onemegawatt data center consumes 16 million kilowatthours of electricity a yearroughly equivalent to the energy consumed by 1400 average U.S. households.

The IT and electrical industries have responded with new energysaving technologies and approaches that could have a notable, positive impact on a companys profitability.

This white paper looks at two key ways that data center managers can improve endtoend energy efficiency: by changing the voltage of power distribution and by taking advantage of new, highefficiency, multimode uninterruptible power systems (UPSs).

Case Study: Norton Healthcare

Norton Healthcare, the largest healthcare system in Louisville, was supporting 13,000 users and 400 servers on a 35-year-old data center. When the data center reached its capacity, the manager reached out to Emerson Network Power to completely remodel the 3,400-square-foot facility.

This paper covers the strategies Emerson Network Power implemented to create a scalable, redundant infrastructure, increasing workload by 100% and reducing help desk calls by 20%. This included installing two Liebert 610 UPS Systems at 400 kVA to double capacity and provide the data center with redundant power, increasing cooling efficiency through a hot-aisle/cold-aisle configuration and implementing the Liebert SiteScan monitoring software to gain visibility of all environmental conditions and enable proactive, preventative maintenance strategy.
